My brother-in-law opened the bottom drawer of my sister’s bureau and
lifted out a tissue-wrapped package. “This,” he said, “is not a slip.
This is lingerie.” He discarded the tissue and handed me the slip. It
was exquisite; silk, handmade and trimmed with a cobweb of lace. The
price tag with an astronomical figure on it was still attached. “Jan
bought this the first time we went to New York, at least 8 or 9 years
ago. She never wore it. She was saving it for a special occasion. Well,
I guess this is the occasion.” He took the slip from me and put it on
the bed with the other clothes we were taking to the mortician. His
hands lingered on the soft material for a moment, then he slammed the
drawer shut and turned to me. “Don’t ever save anything for a special
occasion. Every day you’re alive is a special occasion.”

I remembered those words through the funeral and the days that
followed when I helped him and my niece attend to all the sad chores
that follow an unexpected death. I thought about them on the plane
returning to California from the Midwestern town where my sister’s
family lives. I thought about all the things that she hadn’t seen or
heard or done. I thought about the things that she had done without
realizing that they were special. I’m still thinking about his words,
and they’ve changed my life.

I’m reading more and dusting less. I’m sitting on the deck and admiring
the view without fussing about the weeds in the garden. Read the rest of this entry »

Attitude is Everything

By Francie Baltazar-Schwartz

Jerry was the kind of guy you love to hate. He was always in a good mood and always had something positive to say. When someone would ask him how he was doing, he would reply, “If I were any better, I would be twins!”

He was a unique manager because he had several waiters who had followed him around from restaurant to restaurant. The reason the waiters followed Jerry was because of his attitude. He was a natural motivator. If an employee was having a bad day, Jerry was there telling the employee how to look on the positive side of the situation.

Seeing this style really made me curious, so one day I went up to Jerry and asked him, “I don’t get it! You can’t be a positive person all of the time. How do you do it?”

Jerry replied, “Each morning I wake up and say to myself, ‘Jerry, you have two choices today. You can choose to be in a good mood or you can choose to be in a bad mood.’ I choose to be in a good mood. Each time something bad happens, I can choose to be a victim or I can choose to learn from it. I choose to learn from it. Every time someone comes to me complaining, I can choose to accept their complaining or I can point out the positive side of life. I choose the positive side of life.” Read the rest of this entry »

Laughter Can Be The Best Medicine

Wednesday, October 24, 2007

Research scientists have spent considerable time investigating the effects of laughter. They have found that laughter can help patients recover from illnesses because it tends to lower blood pressure, reduces stress hormone levels, and recharges the body's immune system. Laughter is also known to release the body's natural painkilling substances to provide an overall feeling of well-being. This is a result of stimulating blood flow and aiding the heart.

It has been said that laughter has about the same benefits as aerobic exercise, but it comes without the pain sometimes experienced with physical activity. Laughter also helps to control insulin levels and blood sugar levels, and while scientists don't recommend that patients quit their diets or exercise regimens, they do say that laughing definitely helps. Doctors have discovered that laughter also has an effect on viruses, bacteria, cancer and heart disease. They determined that their patients boosted their immune systems just by watching funny videos and movies.

Laughter is one of the first things we learn as babies. Scientists note that babies who smile the quickest were smiled at more in general. If parents are happy and smiling, it is a given that the baby is likely to smile quickly as well. Much research on children has been performed, and scientists discovered that laughter helped with children's ability to endure pain and was also effective in the healing process. This is a valuable discovery for young cancer patients. Laughing relaxed patients who had to have painful procedures or who suffered from the anxiety of pain expectation.

Researchers have found that there are many positive effects from laughter, but no known negative effects. Laughter really is the best medicine. Just thinking about something funny makes the hormones flow and the body has a positive and healthy response.

Easy Free Ways to Reduce Your Stress

With the pace of modern life, stress and tension is becoming an increasing problem. All too often, we look for some drug or medication to reduce our stress levels, or turn to other crutches such as cigarettes or alcohol to help us deal with a stressful situation. Before considering any of these, there are a number of very simple techniques that can be used to reduce your levels of stress and tension.

The following suggestions are easy and free ways you can use to start managing the stress in your life.

1. Look at your lifestyle and see what can be changed in your work situation, your family life, or your work schedule. Try to get a balanced between your work commitments and your leisure time.

2. Try relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing exercises, or massage.

3. Take some exercise. Physical activity has been shown to be very effective in reducing stress levels.

4. Improve your Time Management and planning skills. Setting yourself unrealistic targets that can never be achieved is a sure way of increasing your stress levels. Use simple techniques such as checklists to break up major tasks or projects into smaller steps. As you work through the tasks, you will gain greater satisfaction from the progress you are making and what you may have first thought of as a stressful, daunting task becomes much more manageable.

5. Watch what you eat. Too much alcohol, caffeine, sugar, fats and tobacco can all affect your body's ability to deal with stress. A well balanced diet containing a range of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and high protein, low fat foods will help you maintain a healthy body. Go to your local library to find books on healthy eating if you don't know where to start.

6. Get enough sleep. It’s important that your body has enough rest to recharge your batteries and give you the energy to deal with any stressful situations.

7. Talk things over with others. The old saying can be true - a problem shared is a problem halved. Talk to your partner, friends or relatives about what is causing your stress.

8. Get involved. Participating in voluntary work or in projects within your community can be a great way to combat stress.

9. Take a break. Give yourself time to relax by reading a book, watch a movie, play a game, listen to music or take a relaxing holiday break.

10.Get active. Any form of physical activity such as gardening, home improvements etc. is a great way to reduce stress.

Losing Stomach Fats

Thursday, June 14, 2007

p>Anyone that is serious about losing stomach fat must know what works and what doesn’t. Below are a couple of tried and true weight loss facts. These are few on what I read on a Women's Health blog.

Fact #1: Exercising in the morning on an empty stomach is the best time to exercise in order to burn fat. For example, if you jog before breakfast, your body will be burning stored fat (the carbohydrates) you left there during the night. A study conducted in Sweden a few years ago concluded that exercise in the morning before eating burns nearly three and a half times more fat than exercising in the evening! Obviously, exercising at any time during the day is better than not exercising at all.

Fact #2: Fat-loss programs should include aerobic and weight training activity. People who combine both weight training and aerobic exercise achieve faster results. The reason is quite simple. Aerobic activity increases the heart rate resulting in an expenditure of calories and weight training increases our metabolic rate, enabling our bodies can burn calories all the time.

If losing stomach fat is your primary goal, develop an obtainable plan on how you would like to get started on your fat loss program. Be sure that your plan includes a healthy eating plan, weight training and aerobic activity. You’re not going to get rid of stomach fat in just a few days, so keep yourself motivated and you’ll find that it will get easier over time. Thousands of people have realized their fitness goals and you can too!

Sleep Apnea May Cause Erectile Dysfunction

Wednesday, May 16, 2007

Men with sleep apnea may suffer from a treatable form of erectile dysfunction caused by regular deprivation of oxygen experienced during these episodes of obstructed breathing, a new report says.
University of Louisville researchers found that, in a study of mice, one week of chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) -- the lack of oxygen suffered during obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) -- resulted in a 55 percent decline in their daily spontaneous erections. After five weeks, the length of time between mice attempts at mating increased on average by 60-fold.

The findings, published in the second September issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, showed that when the mice went back on standard oxygen levels for six weeks, they recovered 74 percent of their original erectile function.

A second treatment using tadalafil, which is generic Cialis and increases the availability of nitric oxide, improved erectile and sexual functioning of almost all the mice to near-normal levels.

"Even relatively short periods of CIH ... are associated with significant effects on sexual activity and erectile function," Dr. David Gozal, professor of pediatrics at the University of Louisville, wrote in the article.

Researchers found no differences in levels of testosterone or other indicators related to erectile function in mice exposed to CIH for eight weeks.

"Although this study was performed in research animals, chronic intermittent hypoxia has profound effects on multiple organ systems and a strong biologic plausibility exists that similar findings will be observed in humans," said John Heffner, past president of the American Thoracic Society, "Early identification and effective therapy of OSA is critically important, especially considering the high prevalence of this disorder."

Cancer Risk Factors

Friday, April 13, 2007

With the knowledge we have about oncogenes, it is possible to tell exactly who will get cancer?

That question is difficult to answer, especially since many factors are involved in the development of the disease. But there are certain risk factors that can increase your chances of getting cancer.

One of them is age. In general, the older you are, the greater your chances of getting cancer. While cancer may occur in children, 75 percent of cases strike the elderly, namely, those who are 50 years old and above.

If you have a family history of cancer, you’re also more likely to have the disease. If your mother or sister had breast cancer, for instance, chances are you will suffer the same fate later.

"Hereditary factors result in a higher susceptibility of an individual to acquire specific cancers. There is, however, still no practical method that can be used for large scale testing, and it would be safer to assume that everyone is susceptible, particularly those with a family history of cancer," said Drs. Adriano V. Laudico, Divina B. Esteban, Corazon A. Ngelangel, and Lilia M. Reyes in the “Cancer Facts and Estimates.”

Still, not all cancer risk factors are impossible to control. The ones you can avoid to lessen your susceptibility to the disease are smoking, sun exposure, alcohol consumption, poor eating habits (such as a diet high in fat and low in fiber, vitamins, and minerals), hepatitis B, and radiation exposure.

"The rapid increase in cancer rates during this century has been blamed largely on the environment. Polluted air and water, food additives and colorings, and changes in diet from 'natural' to 'processed' foods all have been implicated as possible causes (of cancer). Cigarette smoking has been shown conclusively to be a cause of lung and other related cancers. If you wish to reduce your risk of getting cancer, think about changing those factors that are within your control, such as diet and tobacco use," said the editors of Consumer Guide's “Family Health & Medical Guide.”

But even if you follow the above rules, that won't give you absolute protection against cancer since oncogenes and the above risk factors are just one part of the big picture that is cancer. Even those who are exposed to cancer-causing agents won't necessarily develop the disease. Why this is so remains a mystery.

"Why cancer develops in some people who are exposed to potentially cancer-causing agents but not in others is not fully known. But we do know that most cancers develop slowly. It may be five to 40 years after exposure to a cancer-causing agent before there is evidence of the disease,” said Dr. David E. Larson, editor-in-chief of the “Mayo Clinic Family Health Book.”

“Cancer of the lung, for example, may not appear until 25 years or more after sustained exposure to tobacco smoke. This long delay between exposure and development of the disease may partly explain why so many people ignore the warnings associated with smoking," Larson added. (Next: Warning signs of cancer.)
